BIOGRAPHY

My art education began with regular visits to the Philadelphia Museum of Art with my mother, who was an artist herself. After moving from rural Pennsylvania to Baltimore, my education continued with regular trips to the Museum of Modern Art in Baltimore, and the National Gallery. It wasn’t until my late twenties that I started to study in studio. By then, I had settled with my family in Central New York State. I started under the tutelage of Gerald Di Guisto, an abstract sculptor at SUNY Cortland. I then continued my studies with Jack Squires, a figurative sculptor, at Cornell University. In 1983 and 1984, I competed in the annual Johnston Sculpture Competition at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C.From 1993 to 1994 I was an Adjunct Lecturer in sculpture at Binghamton University in Binghamton, NY. I have exhibited widely in the northeastern U.S., including Syracuse NY, Corning, NY, Binghamton, NY, Ithaca, NY, Concord, MA, and NYC.  From 2009 to 2016, I was the curator for the Windsor Whip Works Art Center in Windsor, NY.

Presently, I am the curator for the Center for the Arts in Homer, NY.

ARTISTS  STATEMENT

As an artist, I’ve been most intrigued by the challenges of the human form. As a natural story teller and listener, I found that the stories models share with me become an essential element of the soul of the piece. The surface collages on my sculptures are another way to tell a story, with images that come from other forms of art. These images become a separate vocabulary that gives each piece an independent voice.
